You already know that the breakfast is the most essential meal of the day. If you eat a healthy breakfast every morning, you can reduce the risk of diseases like diabetes and cancer. But do you know that some of those morning choices you are making are completely wrong. Avoid these foods for breakfast.
Sugary cereals and bakery goods
Some cereals are full of sugar and carbs, and when you eat them, your blood sugar spikes rapidly and then come down. It is not good to let your energy crash at the beginning of your day and hence it is best to avoid bakery goods and cereals. Instead of that, choose cereals with higher protein and fiber. You can add walnuts and flaxseed for more protein and fiber.
Packaged pancakes and donuts
Donuts, packaged pancakes are honey-coated or sugarcoated and they will only satisfy your sweet tooth. Do a favor to yourself and to your waistline and choose a whole wheat toast with little butter.
Most boxes of granola that you can buy at the store, might appear to be a healthy mixture of honey, oats, sugar and dried fruit, but it actually contains a lot of calories and fat. Many of them also contain a lot of hidden sugar, unless you are reading the labels and consciously buying natural or organic variety made with simple sugars. Otherwise, you are eating dessert for breakfast.
It may have the makings of a balanced meal – with meat, egg, toast and cheese – but when you really break down that sandwiches for breakfast you are getting a greasy fried egg, full fat cheese, and processed bacon or ham. Instead of that, make one at home using low fat cheese and poached egg.
Smoothies are full of refined white sugar. Most varieties that you can buy it at the stores contain full fat milk or cream (that is worse), so it is really more of a dessert shake than a breakfast shake. Instead of that, blend a healthy version at your home using yogurt, skim or almond milk and nuts and fresh fruits.
