In one new Reuters’ article was claimed that the long-term high-dose use of the painkillers like diclofenac or ibuprofen is equally hazardous in terms of heart attack risk as the use of the drug Vioxx that was withdrawn because of its dangers, according to the researchers.
Maybe you remember the 2004 Vioxx recall was spurred by the 30,000 additional cases of heart attacks and also unexpected cardiac deaths caused by this drug between 1999 and 2003. Despite the fact that the scientific research had gathered as early as the 2000 linking Vioxx to increased strokes and heart attacks, the FDA and the drug’s manufacturer Merck remained silent as the death toll regularly increased.
The Reuters report was focused and on the new research that was published in the Lancet showing the risk of heart attack grows as much as a third and the risk of heart attack doubles among the heaviest users of NSAID drugs.
So, why are so many people taking the NSAID drugs as ibuprofen anyway?
Unhealthy levels of inflammation and pain are fast becoming default bodily states in this industrialized world. In the most cases we can modify the underlying pro-inflammatory conditions by reducing the stress, altering the diet, and reducing the environmental chemical exposures, these approaches take time, energy and disciple, and sometimes we only want the pain to stop at the moment.
In those usual compulsive moments we reach an over-the-counter pill in order to kill the pain. The problem is that together with the pain we may kill ourselves.
Really Serious Adverse Health Effects
The ibuprofen is the perfect example of this. This petrochemical-derivate has been connected to importantly increased risk of a heart attack and also increased cardiac and all-cause mortality, with more than two dozen adverse health effects, including the following:
- DNA Damage
- Hearing loss
- Influenza Mortality
In fact, the ibuprofen is not unique in growing the cardiovascular disease risk or/and mortality. The whole category of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs looks to have this under-recognized dark side, cardiovascular issues and cardiac mortality score highest on the list of more than 100 unintended adverse health effects connected with their use.
